Osaretin Ighile was born in Benin City, Nigeria, a city popular for its bronze and brass work. He has been drawing, painting, and sculpting since childhood. His formal art education began at Auchi Polytechnic where he trained in fine and applied arts. He received the "Best Student" award. Upon graduation, he studied fine art at the University of Benin, and concentrated in sculpture.
In 1986, he won an award in the Treasures of Ancient Benin Empire Sculpture Exhibition in Benin City, Nigeria. He graduated from the University of Benin with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. Osaretin works in oil, clay, bronze, wood, stone, and concrete. Pieces include building relief, garden sculptures, busts, metal fabrications, and landscaping. In 1992, he emigrated to the United States and became a citizen in September 2004. He resides in Brooklyn, New York. He currently attends master's level classes at Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY) in painting and new forms.
